Stan Lapidus: A Masterclass in Bold Pivots and Patient Impact
For Stan Lapidus, breakthrough innovation starts with a clear, disciplined willingness to pivot. His career offers one of the strongest playbooks in bioscience entrepreneurship, shaped by bold decisions that transformed diagnostics and saved lives. Lapidus founded Cytyc, creator of the ThinPrep pap test that revolutionized early detection of cervical cancer, and later founded Exact Sciences, maker of the Cologuard colon-cancer screening diagnostic.
Exact Sciences was recently acquired by AbbVie for $21 billion, underscoring the scale of his impact. His leadership continues to shape Colorado’s rise as a Hub for Health Impact.
Lapidus moved to Colorado in 2017 to be closer to family. Today, he serves as entrepreneur in residence at Catalio Capital Management, sits on seven biotechnology boards, and advises Boulder’s Think Bioscience. He brings unmatched experience to Colorado founders and reinforces a principle he learned firsthand: pivoting is the rule, not the exception, for health-innovation startups.
He believes founders can make pivots more manageable by acting early. “The earlier the pivot, the less costly it will be.” He also encourages leaders to anticipate personnel changes. Pivots often bring layoffs and executive departures, and he stresses clarifying separation terms up front. “One of the hardest situations is when agreements are written in perpetuity on the assumption that we’re going to remain friends and colleagues forever.”
Board alignment is also essential. “Otherwise, you get a lot of board blowback, and you get killed.” And whenever possible, pivot in parallel.
ThinPrep reflects that strategy. Cytyc launched in 1987 to pursue digital image analysis for pap smears, but limited 1980s-era AI slowed progress. Lapidus opened a side program to create a better pap smear with evenly distributed cells. “Not a slam dunk,” he says, yet the program advanced faster. He ultimately dropped the digital analysis effort and reduced headcount from 40 to 20. “Yeah, that’s hard.”
But how many cervical cancers did that pivot catch early, and would Exact Sciences and Cologuard exist without it? Lapidus shows how tough decisions ripple across decades of patient impact. Colorado Health and Tech Centers celebrates this remarkable founder and his contributions to Colorado’s life sciences ecosystem.
